The World Health Organization (WHO) recently estimated that ambient air pollution causes 482,000 premature deaths within the WHO European Region with an estimated economic cost of US$ 1.575 trillion including morbidity costs. These estimates are based on impacts on cardiorespiratory endpoints, but recent research has demonstrated that air pollution exposure, particularly to traffic-derived emissions, may also affect mental health and wellbeing. However, mental health is not represented in the WHO report due to limited research. This study aims to address this gap and investigate the evidence base examining the link between air pollution and psychosis.
