Associations of QT prolonging medications with adverse outcomes

Many psychiatric (especially antipsychotics) and other medications have a tendency to change the flow of electricity in the heart, which is called QT prolongation. This can affect the way the heart beats, and we want to find out whether prescription of those medications is associated with a higher risk of dying or being admitted to hospital.

The Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) system is a computer system that allows researchers at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) to carry out research using information from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust clinical records.
