Extracting LGBT+ and gender status from the free text of mental health records

  • Applicant: Margaret Heslin
  • Project ID: 22-008

LGBT+ gender status individuals are known to have a significantly increased risk for mental health problems compared with non-LGBT+ individuals, yet little research has been conducted on this link and on treatment outcomes following treatment by secondary mental health services. LGBT+ status is not routinely recorded in the structured part of the electronic health record, and so this project will investigate whether it is recorded in the unstructured, free text part of the record and whether it can be extracted from this part.
