Association between sedatives and worsening of obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA)

Guidance on use of sedatives suggest to use in caution in patients with OSA. Literature does not suggest sedatives to have a deleterious effect in OSA. We want to see you what the outcomes have been in SLAM patients. Current guidance states use sedatives with caution in people with OSA. This caution is not defined in terms of drug choice, dose, monitoring. Furthermore, data on sedative use in OSA is sparse. a 2015 Cochrane review concluded that sedatives do not have a deleterious effect in OSA. In SLAM on acute wards it is not always possible to avoid sedatives during the acute phase. We want to see in our own patients whether sedative use has been associated with harmful effects
