Establishing Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Patients with Severe Mental Illness

There are a variety of risk factors that put people at greater risk of cardiovascular disease such as heart attacks and strokes, many of which are more prevalent in the population with Severe Mental Illness. This project aims to see if Natural Language Processing can be used to pull these from text to establish whether it would be possible to identify patients at greater risk of cardiovascular diseases. This project aims to see if Natural Language Processing can be used to pull these from text to establish whether it would be possible to identify patients at greater risk of cardiovascular diseases by looking at whether they have Systemic Lupus Erythematosus or sexual dysfunction – both of which are risk factors.

The Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) system is a computer system that allows researchers at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) to carry out research using information from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust clinical records.
