Identifying adequacy of hyperprolactinemia assessment in patients on antipsychotics under a specific community mental health team in Southwark
The rationale for this project is the high prevalence of sexual dysfunction in people taking antipsychotics (Almost 45% of people on first generation antipsychotics had reported to suffer from sexual dysfunction in one study in 2002) – many antipsychotics with strong D2 receptor blocking action are known to increase the prolactin level which, as per Smith et al, 2002, is likely to override any other possible causes of sexual dysfunction in people on antipsychotics. This project aims at scanning the electronic records of patients under a specific Community Mental Health Team in Southwark borough, on antipsychotic(s), to assess if sexual side effects focusing on signs and symptoms of hyperprolactinemia are being clinically assessed during patient reviews, in addition to laboratory monitoring of serum prolactin.
