Understanding post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis in children and young people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
Although post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) has been thoroughly investigated in the general population, research on its prevalence and impact on young people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) remains lacking. Recent studies show that autistic individuals are more likely to experience traumatic events, such as bullying and abuse, which increases their risk of developing PTSD. However, due to their distinct sensory and cognitive profiles, they may experience trauma differently, which could influence how PTSD is diagnosed in this population. This project aims to shed some light on the association between PTSD and ASD in children and young people. Using CRIS data, we will investigate PTSD diagnosis in CAMHS patients with and without ASD. Additionally, we will explore the diagnosis of PTSD and other mental health disorders in relation to adversity exposure in both groups. Our findings will contribute to better understanding, recognition, and treatment of PTSD in autistic youth.
