Audit of Delirium Quality Standards (NICE)
The aim of the project is to complete a re-audit of the management of delirium in older adults’ mental health services. Delirium is an acute onset confusional state which is associated with poor outcomes. Estimates vary, however the prevalence of delirium in people admitted to medical wards is 20-30%. Early recognition and timely management of delirium is crucial in reducing the morbidity and mortality associated with the condition. NICE published clinical guidelines in 2010 and an audit was conducted by the MHOA&D CAG in 2012, which led to a number of recommendations to improve the management of delirium within the trust. NICE published new quality standards in July 2014, and the aim of the current study is to examine current practice against these standards, to ensure the management of delirium within SLAM meets NICE guidelines and best practice.
