Thinking and Social Skills in Functional Neurological Symptoms | C4C
Patients with Functional Neurological Symptoms (FNS) experience symptoms which may not be explained by medical causes, e.g. weakness and paralysis. FNS-patients may also have depression, anxiety, problems with thinking skills and social functioning. In the current study, people will be asked to complete puzzle-like concentration, language and memory tasks, as well as questionnaires about feelings and relationships. Overall, the interview will take about two hours. Results will be compared between people with and without FNS to see if there are group differences. FNS-patients are being recruited from Neuropsychiatry clinics at the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). Control participants will be recruited from the community, university and a database of patients from SLaM who have consented to be contacted about research. This study will help our understanding of psychological difficulties in FNS-patients and may provide better therapy strategies for them.
