A population-based study of participation in creative activities and its impact on wellbeing in individuals with mental illness in South London | C4C

  • Applicant: Bianca Oltean
  • Project ID: 21-087

The reasoning behind this project is to evaluate the link between artistic engagement in creative activities and wellbeing in people who have used the NHS mental health services at South London and Maudsley in the past three years. Using the strengths of the NIHR Biomedical Research Centre’s (BRC) Consent for Contact (C4C) Initiative at South London and Maudsley NHS (SLaM) and the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience (IoPPN), this project will examine for the first time, at population level, participant engagement with artistic activities and the impact of participation in the arts for people with specific mental health problems by linking survey data on creative activities participation with clinical record data pertaining to specific information, such as mental health diagnosis, number of mental health difficulty episodes, and number of inpatient admissions, if any.

The Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) system is a computer system that allows researchers at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) to carry out research using information from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust clinical records.
