The NICE Guidelines for Smoking Cessation in Secondary Care (NICE, 2013) recommend changes to the treatment of tobacco addiction in mental health services, and additional changes to the environment and behaviour of staff. On 1/10/2014 SLaM updated their Smoke Free Policy and implemented new standards to meet these guidelines. The purpose of this project is to use data from CRIS to audit and evaluate the direct and indirect effects of the Smoke Free Policy (2014). The aims of this project are to measure: 1] The identification of service user’s smoking status and severity of tobacco dependence, 2] The numbers of smokers who a) accept support for temporary abstinence from smoking during an inpatient admission, b) temporarily abstain from smoking without support during an inpatient admission c) accept referral for specialist support during an inpatient admission and in the community; d) accept support with smoking reduction in the community, 3] The use of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), varenicline, bupropion or electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) in service users, 4] Inpatient activity (e.g. admissions and re-admissions), 5] The extent of smoking related untoward events, 6] Plasma levels of psychotropic medication and changes to medication regimes.
