Developing better understanding and management of pain in mental health services

  • Applicant: Ruimin Ma
  • Project ID: 21-098

Chronic pain and mental illness and appear to commonly co-occur. Despite this, people living with mental illness and chronic pain appear to have difficulty accessing pain services. Moreover, little is known about the relationship between mental illness and pain, treatment received, and outcomes experienced (e.g. physical or mental health, social outcomes) among people with mental illness. Using data from CRIS and Lambeth Datanet (LDN) we will explore the relationship between chronic pain and mental illness, and examine the differences among those with mental illness and comorbid chronic pain versus those with chronic pain along on outcomes including mental health, physical health, treatment received, social and work outcomes.

The Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) system is a computer system that allows researchers at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) to carry out research using information from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust clinical records.
