Diagnostic spirometry for adults with severe mental illness: addressing inequitable gaps in respiratory diagnosis and treatment in mental health inpatient settings at SLaM.

  • Applicant: Gracie Tredget
  • Project ID: 26-036

This pilot project aims to tackle a major but overlooked driver of early mortality in people with serious mental illness (SMI): undiagnosed and undertreated common lung conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and asthma. The pilot will involve delivery of an integrated diagnostic spirometry and respiratory optimisation pathway for inpatients at the Maudsley Hospital, delivered in partnership with the King’s College Hospital Integrated Respiratory Service and South London & Maudsley NHS FT – Southwark Directorate.
