Improving capture of violence events and experiences using natural language processing

  • Applicant: Robert Stewart
  • Project ID: 22-045

Experiences and acts of violence are clearly important issues in mental health but are not well captured in the structured fields of electronic records; instead, they are described in text which makes it difficult to flag these issues for research using CRIS. In 2021 ‘natural language processing’ applications were successfully developed to capture some instances of violence – both experiences and acts. The proposed work will improve on these to enhance research possibilities.

The Clinical Record Interactive Search (CRIS) system is a computer system that allows researchers at the NIHR Maudsley Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) to carry out research using information from South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust clinical records.
