Outcomes following self-harm assessments by Liaison Old Age Psychiatry services

  • Applicant: Robert Stewart
  • Project ID: 26-028

Liaison Old Age Psychiatry services provide mental health assessments and interventions for older adults (usually age 65+) in acute general hospitals. SLaM has four such services for its catchment area. Self-harm is a common reason for referral to these services but we don’t know much about how common this is or what happens to people who are referred for this reason. Most UK studies of self-harm tend to be in younger age groups. This study will therefore describe self-harm (both past and current) in patients seen by Liaison Old Age Psychiatry services and will investigate subsequent outcomes such as repeat hospital presentations and mortality.
