Patient contributions to the evidence base on inpatient care. Study: Adapting the Views on Inpatient Care (VOICE) questionnaire to meet the needs of those with a primary diagnosis of Personality Disorder | C4C

People with a diagnosis of Personality Disorder are at risk of admission to acute inpatient wards and may experience recurrent hospitalisations which typically last for very short periods of time. According to recent literature (Bonnington and Rose, 2014; Sulzer, 2015), there is a stigma associated with a PD diagnosis and PD service-users can be treated as ‘bad’ rather than ‘ill’ patients, and can be met with barriers to and denial of treatment. The present study seeks to explore the perceptions, concerns and needs relating to inpatient care of service users with a primary diagnosis of PD. The existing service-user generated measure ‘Views On Inpatient Care’ (VOICE; Evans et al., 2012) will be adapted (in consultation with PD service-users via qualitative interviews) in order to create a measure to be used on inpatient wards, which more appropriately meets the needs of those with a primary diagnosis of PD.
