The impact of alcohol treatment on suicidal crisis and use of emergency psychiatric care.
Our previous research using CRIS data from suicidal detainees at the SLaM centralised Place of Safety has shown that alcohol dependence is markedly associated with increased risk of subsequent death or repeat contact with emergency psychiatric care, beyond that of both low / no risk drinkers and other forms of alcohol use such as binge drinking. It is likely that many of these alcohol dependent individuals are not currently engaged with alcohol treatment services (NICE, 2011), so we aim to estimate the impact of engagement with such services on suicide-related outcomes; mortality and repeat use of crisis care.
