People with serious mental illnesses (SMI) such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder die 20-years earlier than other members of the general population, mainly due to illnesses related to obesity. These illnesses include high blood pressure and raised blood sugars. We want to estimate how many people with SMI under the care of The Maudsley have these conditions; this will help us to develop clinical services at The Maudsley to support the physical health of people with SMI.”
