Understanding admissions to Place of Safety
The Health Based Place of Safety (HBPoS) is a service at the Maudsley Hospital. It supports people brought in by the police because of serious concerns about their mental health, usually under Sections 135 or 136 of the Mental Health Act.
A review of summary data showed that Black people are admitted to the Health Based Place of Safety more often than expected when compared with the local population and people receiving mental health care in our community services.
The service wants to look at more detailed data to better understand who is admitted to identify and reduce any unfair differences. It will also help to identify what changes the trust needs to make to avoid admitting people who are already receiving community care.
