Use of artificial intelligence chatbots among South London and Maudsley service users: a study of prevalence and associations using anonymised clinical records
Artificial intelligence chatbots (for example, ChatGPT or Character.AI) are now widely used, but we do not know how often people receiving mental health care use them or whether this affects their wellbeing. Using anonymised electronic health record data, we will check how often these chatbots are mentioned, which groups of people are most likely to use them, and how they are using them. Some early research suggests that some chatbots might affect psychotic symptoms, so we will also review a set of records from people with psychosis to see whether chatbot use appears linked to the development or worsening of psychotic symptoms.
