What is the risk of thromboembolism in patients admitted to acute psychiatric wards?
Psychiatric inpatients are thought to be at increased risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE)Venous is a condition in which a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the leg, groin or arm, due to factors including poor mobility, physical restraint, catatonia, poor fluid intake, and fever and recent guidelines recommend assessments for patients admitted to psychiatric inpatient units. However, this risk has never been studied in larger samples of mental health patients, making it difficult to recommend interventions. We want to determine, what the risk of thromboembolism is in psychiatric inpatient and what patient characteristics are associated with a particularly increased risk.
